The Nebraska Cornhuskers left no doubt as to who would take the 2009 Holiday Bowl, In front of more than 64,600 fans The 20th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the 22nd ranked Arizona Wildcats 33-0, in the first shut out in the bowl’s 32 year history. Nebraska’s game plan worked to near perfection from the opening kickoff. By the end of the night, Nebraska had out gained Arizona in total offense by an incredible 396 -109 margin, converted 19 first downs to Arizona’s 6, and held nearly an 18 minute advantage in time of possession.

Offensive Highlights - Junior wide receiver Niles Paul was named the game’s Offensive MVP, Paul finished the game with 237 all purpose yards, including 123 yards receiving, highlighted by a 74 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Zac Lee in the third quarter for a touchdown to cap off the game. Lee ended the day 13 of 23 passing for 173 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball 18 times for 65 yards and adding another score. Freshman running back Rex Burkhead led the way on the ground with a game high 89 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Nebraska held the ball for over 38 minutes as compared to Arizona who was on offense for just over 21.

Defensive Highlights - They should respect the Cornhusker defense now after Nebraska completely shutdown the Arizona offense, allowing them to only 109 total yards. The Cornhuskers were in the Arizona offensive backfield all night long, causing problems for quarterback Nick Foles. On the night Foles finished 6 of 20 passing for 28 yards. This marked the only time all season Arizona failed to score.

Special Teams Highlights - Alex Henery finished the game with a Holiday Bowl record four field goals, from 47, 50, 41 and 22 yards.

* Final Comments *

Arizona head coach Mike Stoops commented after the game,

“We got whacked by a very good team.”

Nebraska’s All American defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said in a post game interview, We have been getting better week in, week out and we had one last chance to do it as a team in 2009. That’s why we wanted to shut them down and make them realize that they needed to respect us.

Nebraska reached 10 wins for the first time since the 2003 season. Cornhusker head coach Bo Pelini commented after the game,

“Nebraska’s back and we’re here to stay.”

ESPN/ABC’s Ed Cunningham picked his preferred playing fields for USA TODAY below is Ed’s quote about Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium

At the University of Nebraska, they know how to make a showcase out of the sport. Pyrotechnics even breathe fire on the field during the game. “The all-red-clad patrons of Memorial Stadium make this a memorable place regardless of the outcome,” Cunningham says. “Lincoln is one of those college towns that give the term ‘college town’ such special meaning.” Source USA TODAY

The history of dirty playing goes to Missouri and is well known by other Big 12 Teams. Nebraska Fans still remember history of dirty plays such as diving into the knee of Jarvis Redwine while he was blocking for an extra point or the hit on Gill in 1982 (head shot)

In response to some comments from the Missouri players and their fans about the recent game in Memorial Stadium (Lincoln Nebraska) comments from Chase Daniel calling Nebraska one of the dirtiest teams he has played and accused the Huskers of hitting him late and throwing balls at the Tigers during warm-ups. If Chase thinks Nebraska plays dirty he might want to think about where he is standing on the field in pre-game warm ups, and for the alleged spitting incident let it go he can’t confirm it or produce a name. If this is what he thinks dirty football is then, if he gets drafted to the pros he will need to man up and grow a pair. Or he will be left behind only to be remembered by his infamous video.

I can remember growing up watching my Dad go to work at Memorial Stadium, when I was old enough to tag along I got a chance to see Husker Football from the inside. I was thrilled as a kid to learn how much work went into preparation for a game. There was much work maintaining the field (Real Grass at that time) along with keeping Memorial Stadium looking good for all the fans. I soon learned the perks of growing up around the Husker Football, there was that magic door that we always went in and once inside being greeted by players, trainers and coaches many whom became life long friends of my family. At the games I got to see the game from many different views, from the bleachers to the sidelines and even a few views from the press box. Some of my most memorable moments would have to be kicking field goals with my friends for hours, autographed footballs and talking with Bob Devaney as he sat in his big red chair.

Most of the people I knew at the Athletic Department are retired now, a new generation of employees still do the same chores each week to keep the Husker Football Tradition moving forward. A new high tech era now brings the game to a new level for everyone involved. Now as I prepare to sit in the stadium and watch Husker Football I look down on the field and see a football team that reminds me of the past, a team with leadership, skills, dedication to the Husker tradition. I will be looking for that small figure on the sideline that reminds me of myself and days long past when I was just a LIL’ Husker fan.
