The Nebraska Cornhuskers left no doubt as to who would take the 2009 Holiday Bowl, In front of more than 64,600 fans The 20th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the 22nd ranked Arizona Wildcats 33-0, in the first shut out in the bowl’s 32 year history. Nebraska’s game plan worked to near perfection from the opening kickoff. By the end of the night, Nebraska had out gained Arizona in total offense by an incredible 396 -109 margin, converted 19 first downs to Arizona’s 6, and held nearly an 18 minute advantage in time of possession.

Offensive Highlights - Junior wide receiver Niles Paul was named the game’s Offensive MVP, Paul finished the game with 237 all purpose yards, including 123 yards receiving, highlighted by a 74 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Zac Lee in the third quarter for a touchdown to cap off the game. Lee ended the day 13 of 23 passing for 173 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball 18 times for 65 yards and adding another score. Freshman running back Rex Burkhead led the way on the ground with a game high 89 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Nebraska held the ball for over 38 minutes as compared to Arizona who was on offense for just over 21.

Defensive Highlights - They should respect the Cornhusker defense now after Nebraska completely shutdown the Arizona offense, allowing them to only 109 total yards. The Cornhuskers were in the Arizona offensive backfield all night long, causing problems for quarterback Nick Foles. On the night Foles finished 6 of 20 passing for 28 yards. This marked the only time all season Arizona failed to score.

Special Teams Highlights - Alex Henery finished the game with a Holiday Bowl record four field goals, from 47, 50, 41 and 22 yards.

Arizona head coach Mike Stoops commented after the game,

“We got whacked by a very good team.”

Nebraska’s All American defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said in a post game interview,  We have been getting better week in, week out and we had one last chance to do it as a team in 2009. That’s why we wanted to shut them down and make them realize that they needed to respect us.

Nebraska reached 10 wins for the first time since the 2003 season. Cornhusker head coach Bo Pelini commented after the game,

“Nebraska’s back and we’re here to stay.”

The Holiday Bowl is always one of the most exciting bowl games of the college football postseason. The 2009 Holiday Bowl features the Nebraska Cornhuskers from the Big 12 against the Arizona Wildcats from the Pac 10. Arizona will count on freshman quarterback Nick Foles to lead their team to a victory. Foles will face a Nebraska defense, one of the best in the entire country. Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh a 6-4, senior defensive tackle from Portland, Oregon, captured the Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, Chuck Bednarik Award and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. Suh lead the Huskers to the Big 12 North Division title, and was named (Associated Press College Football Player of the Year) On December 30, 2009 at Qualcomm Stadium the All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year will lead the Blackshirts against Arizona in the 2009 Holiday Bowl.

Statistically this Texas Tech team makes people cringe, they are #1 in the nation in the passing game surprise surprise. They rank #2 in the nation in total offense. But that has become expected of the Leach teams the past couple of years. Last weekend against Kansas State University the managed to put up a monster score of 66-14, with 739 yards of total offense on a KSU team that was only give up 267.2 yards per game this season. After this game I don’t believe that Texas Tech will be limited to one Quarter Back after the performance Jr. Stephen Sheffield had while the starting Quarterback Taylor Potts was out of the game after suffering a concussion. Taylor Potts has been having a great year as well he is 159-235 with 6 Interceptions and 13 touchdowns and 1817 yards in 5 games this year.
Jr. Stephen Sheffield “Sticks” as he was nick named by his team had a starting quarterback caliber kind of game. Sheffield was 33-41 with 490 yards through the air with 7 Touchdowns to 10 different receivers in the win over Kansas State oh I didn’t mention he was out of the game for the whole 4th quarter. This guy is the real deal Nebraska is going to have to play lights out in the secondary and not give up big plays. Luckily for us Nebraska ranks #2 in the Big 12 in Passing Defense only allowing 162.6 yards per game and has only allowed 75 completions on the year and 1 touchdown. This of course will be the biggest test secondary wise for the Cornhuskers.

With a team like Texas Tech you would think there would be one stand out and maybe 2 but not the case this year, Michael Crabtree and Eric Morris who combined together for 171 receptions last year. This year there are a number of receivers with numerous receptions on the year. Jr. WR Alex Torres is the team leader with 31 receptions with 328 yards and 3 Touchdowns on the year. Tramain Swindall is quickly becoming a popular go to guy with 5 catches for 97 yards against Kansas state as well as 5 catches for 139 yards against New Mexico State the week before. There really isn’t a “deep threat” go to guy, they mostly do little out routes and there receivers are great at breaking tackles and getting the extra yards.

Defensively the Red Raiders are a pretty basic team, they have had problems with keeping there players in the secondary healthy with injuries to Safety Cody Davis and Cornerback LaRon Moore. Cody Davis is one of the team leaders in tackles with 36 tackles/27 solo tackles. The Red Raider defense has managed to get 4 interceptions on the year. The Linebackers for the this Red Raider team are always flying to the ball and busting gaps and have managed to accumulate a lot of tackles, Brian Duncan has 43 tackles/32 solo tackles on the year.

One glooming statistic that I think the Cornhuskers are going to definitely be able to capitalize on are the turnovers. Texas Tech ranks dead last in the Big 12 for turnover margin with a tremendous -4 margin,  the next closest team to Texas Tech would have -2. Nebraska on the other hand is in a whole different boat with + 5 on the year. With the recent events that have happened with Running Back Rex Burkhead hurting his foot and out indefinitely we are going to have to help out our offense and Roy Helu Jr. and have our Defense put some points on the board and capitalize on those interception chances we had last week against Missouri. As Suh always says, they are just another team in our way to achieving our goal for the year, so lets take care of them boys.

Coach Pelini might be waiting to see how his defense does against a stiffer test this week at home against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are second nationally in total offense (521.5 yards) scoring offense (43.2 points) and passing offense (443.5 yards) I think as far as the secondary goes, this will be the Huskers greatest challenge yet.

Honors: Ndamukong Suh - In addition to being chosen the Big 12 defensive player of the week, Suh was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation national defensive player of the week and the Lott Trophy player of the week. Suh had six tackles including one for a loss, sack, forced fumble, pass breakup and an interception against Missouri.

Note: ESPNs College Game Day is working of a feature about Suh, it is expected to air Saturday. Sports Illustrated is also coming to Lincoln for a story on Suh.

As for those black jerseys? Fans might like talking about the Blackshirts, but Bo Pelini would rather not.
